Registering a trademark with the Organisation Africaine de la Propriété Intellectuelle OAPI allows you to obtain a single registration that grants protection in all seventeen (17) member states: Benin, Burkina Faso, Cameroon, Central African Republic, Chad, Comoros, Republic of the Congo, Equatorial Guinea, Gabon, Guinea, Guinea-Bissau, Ivory Coast (Côte d'Ivoire), Mali, Mauritania, Niger, Senegal and Togo.
OAPI is a member state of the Madrid Protocol, so an international registration can also be extended to this region through the Madrid System. We offer trademark filing through the Madrid System.
If you register a combined trademark (including both word and figurative elements) in OAPI, the exclusive right to use the mark is limited to the exact configuration in which it was filed and registered. If you wish to use only the word element or only the figurative element separately, it is recommended to file an additional trademark covering just those elements.
