How Long Is a Trademark Valid in Uganda?

Trademarks in Uganda are valid for 7 years from the filing date, and can be renewed for successive 10-year terms.

When Must You Renew a Trademark?

  • Renewal window: 3 months before the expiration date
  • Grace period: 1 month after expiration, starting from publication of non-renewal in the Gazette
  • After grace period: The mark is removed from the Register, but may be restored under certain conditions

Requirements to Renew a Trademark in Uganda

  • Form TM No. 18, completed and signed by the registered proprietor
  • If an agent files the renewal, a simply signed Power of Attorney is required
  • No proof of use is required
  • Renewals are not published in practice

  • Restoration is possible after lapse, if fees are paid and the Registrar finds it just
  • A lapsed trademark can block third-party registration for 1 year
  • After 1 year, the Registrar may allow re-registration unless use is shown
