Sweden Trademark Renewal

As of January 1, 2019, a trademark is valid for 10 years from the application date. It can be renewed for unlimited 10-year periods. Older registrations keep their 10-year cycles from the registration date.

• Renewal window: 6 months before the expiration date
• Grace period: 6 months after the expiration date
• After grace period: The trademark automatically lapses and cannot be restored

• No documents are required besides payment of the renewal fee
• Payment of renewal fees:
• If there a change of representative, a new Power of Attorney must be signed and dated (electronic copies accepted)

• Restoration is not available
• A lapsed trademark can be re-registered by a third party at any time
• Prior owners may oppose if they prove extensive use or bad faith by the applicant

• PRV sends a single renewal reminder to the recorded agent or owner shortly after expiry
• No follow-up notice is issued once the mark is removed

• Failing to renew within the grace period
• Overlooking the fee per class
• Not updating the Power of Attorney when changing representation

You can still renew during the 6-month grace period by paying the late fee. After that, the trademark is cancelled without restoration.
