Why and how to register a trademark in the Maldives

The rights to a trademark in the Maldives are granted to the person or company that uses it in this territory. It is highly recommended, however, to publish a cautionary notice in the local newspapers in order to claim ownership over a trademark.

There is no provision for trademark renewal in the Maldives. However, it is advisable to re-publish the cautionary notice annually.

Official trademark registration is only possible for companies that are registered in the Maldives and is done via the Intellectual Property Unit of the Ministry of Economic Development. If you have a company registered in the Maldives and wish to register your trademark, please contact us.
