Trademark protection in Ethiopia is obtained by filing an application with the Ethiopian Intellectual Property Office (EIPO). Registration is strongly recommended because it:
- Confirms your exclusive rights over the sign for the goods/services claimed.
- Provides a clear basis to act against infringers and conflicting later filings.
- Puts your trademark on the official register and in the trademarks journal, making your rights visible to third parties.
To register, a local representative files a trademark application with EIPO, indicating the owner’s details, the mark (word/logo/combined) and the list of goods/services (note that the standard price covers up to 10 items per class; additional items may incur extra costs). The Office examines the application, publishes it for opposition, and, if no serious objections arise, proceeds to registration and issues the certificate.
If you register a combined trademark (word + logo), your exclusive right is limited to that exact configuration. If you wish to use and protect the word element and the logo independently, it is advisable to file separate applications (one word mark and one figurative mark).
