The Madrid system now counts 98 members, with the adhesion of Brunei Darussalam on October 6, 2016, as announced by the World Intellectual Property Organization on that same date.
From January 6, 2017, date on which the Madrid Protocol will enter into force in Brunei Darussalam, local brand owners will be able to extend their trademarks to the other 97 members of the protocol, covering 114 territories, with a single application in one language.
Conversely, foreign trademark owners interested in the Brunei Darussalam market will also be able to use the Madrid system to obtain protection for their trademark in that territory.
